FAQ
Can you withdraw cash for free in Athens?
It's difficult. Within 2 km of the centre of Athens we don't know of any ATM that is reliably free. Check the screen at the ATM.
Should I accept the ATM's currency conversion?
If the ATM offers a conversion, always choose “without conversion” or euros. The ATM's own conversion often costs 5–10%.
How do I avoid ATM fees in Athens?
Avoid mainly: Euronet (€4.90), Eurobank (€1.80), Εθνική Τράπεζα (National Bank) (€1.90), Alpha Bank (€1.80). Use the ATMs marked as free above and on the map. Withdraw a larger amount once rather than small amounts several times, and check before your trip what your own bank charges for foreign withdrawals.
